Cal Hosts Nebraska, Air Force, Stanford At Noon PT
BERKELEY - California men's gymnastics hosts its final home contest of 2024 on Sunday, welcoming Nebraska, Air Force and Stanford in its first quad meet of the season. The first rotation is scheduled for noon PT, with the Golden Bears starting off on floor. Both the Huskers (412.900 – Feb. 17) and the Falcons (397.250 – Feb. 10) posted season-high scores in their last outings; they will be looking to continue that momentum as they share the floor with host Cal and the No. 2 Cardinal.
Although the hosts currently field the nation's No. 5 parallel bars squad, with individuals
Noah Sano and
Noah Newfeld ranking eighth and 10th, respectively, on that event, all three visiting teams have dangerous pieces of their own, with many of them earning national team billing at last weekend's Winter Cup. Nebraska currently boasts the NCAA's top-ranked vault squad, with No. 6 Zachary Tiderman (average 14.767) contributing heavily to the group's three-score average of 72.783. Stanford, meanwhile, averages 68.850 on still rings to lead the nation; it is Card junior Mark Berlaga who shines on that event, ranking third overall with his average of 14.467. Although the biggest star of Air Force's lineup, Winter Cup pommel horse champion Patrick Hoopes, will not be competing on Sunday due to national team duties, the Falcons still field two nationally ranked individuals in Garrett Braunton (No. 6 all-around) and Sam Brown (No. 9 floor, No. 10 pommel horse).
The Bears will also honor a remarkable crop of graduating seniors in a post-meet ceremony, presenting no fewer than eight young men with the traditional wooden bear statue that signifies the completion of their collegiate gymnastics careers.
