Mangum, Turner Earn Pac-12 Weekly Honors
Both Rank Top 2 Nationwide In Their Respective Events
California track & field's
Mason Mangum and
Amari Turner have been named the Pac-12 Men's and Women's Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference Tuesday.
Â
This is the first career weekly award for Mangum, who won the long jump at the Hornet Invitational on Saturday with a massive wind-aided personal best of 7.86m (25-9.5). That mark is currently the best in Division I this outdoor season. He also sprinted to a wind-legal PR of 10.59 in the 100m, good for sixth place, and ran the third leg of Cal's second-place 4x100m relay team that posted a time of 39.98. Mangum is the first Golden Bear male jumper to earn the award since Hammed Suleman in 2013.
Â
"Mason is a hard worker and is a true student of his event – he really does put in the work and wants to be better," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Robyne Johnson, who leads the horizontal jumps, said. "This is very exciting, and he deserves it."
Â
Turner, a pole vaulter, has earned Pac-12 weekly honors once before, having clinched the award on March 21, 2023, for her meet record-setting performance at that year's Cardinal Classic. At the 2024 Hornet Invitational, she cleared her highest bar yet to win the competition at 4.32m (14-2), seizing control of the all-time program record and moving into No. 2 in Division I this year.
Â
"I am really proud of Amari and how she jumped a lifetime best in her first outdoor meet this year," assistant coach
Dan Lefever, who coaches the vertical jumps, said. "She took her first jump two-and-a-half hours after the competition began – it was a challenge to jump high in such a large field, but she responded very well."
Â
The Golden Bears have not had multiple athletes win Pac-12 weekly honors since April 12, 2022, when Ezinne Abba,
Mykolas Alekna and
Camryn Rogers were all recognized by the conference.
Â
Cal track & field will be back in action on March 22-23 at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego.
