SAN FRANCISCO –Sampson Zheng remained within reach of the individual lead, but the No. 19 California men's golf team struggled during a rain-soaked second round of The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park on Friday.
 
The Golden Bears carded an 18-over-par 298 in the second round and dropped into a tie for 20th place after entering Friday in a tie for ninth. Cal and the rest of the 31-team field battled difficult weather conditions all day, facing steady rain and winds that ranged from 15-20 miles per hour.
 
Zheng – who posted his fifth consecutive round under par with a 2-under 68 on Thursday – shot 2-over 72 on Friday and finished the day tied for 12th, four strokes behind clubhouse leader Ben Van Wyk (-4) of Georgia. Zheng, who started on hole 10, birdied back-to-back holes on 16 and 17, but recorded four bogeys on 18, 1, 3 and 8. Freshman Eric Lee also posted a 2-over 72 in the second round, jumping 15 spots into a tie for 53rd. After three bogeys on the back end of his first nine holes played, Lee carded a birdie on hole 3 on the way to a 1-under 34 front nine.
