Bears Fall Back At The Goodwin
Zheng Within Striking Distance Of Individual Lead After 36 Played
SAN FRANCISCO –Sampson Zheng remained within reach of the individual lead, but the No. 19 California men's golf team struggled during a rain-soaked second round of The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park on Friday.
The Golden Bears carded an 18-over-par 298 in the second round and dropped into a tie for 20th place after entering Friday in a tie for ninth. Cal and the rest of the 31-team field battled difficult weather conditions all day, facing steady rain and winds that ranged from 15-20 miles per hour.
Zheng – who posted his fifth consecutive round under par with a 2-under 68 on Thursday – shot 2-over 72 on Friday and finished the day tied for 12th, four strokes behind clubhouse leader Ben Van Wyk (-4) of Georgia. Zheng, who started on hole 10, birdied back-to-back holes on 16 and 17, but recorded four bogeys on 18, 1, 3 and 8. Freshman
Eric Lee also posted a 2-over 72 in the second round, jumping 15 spots into a tie for 53rd. After three bogeys on the back end of his first nine holes played, Lee carded a birdie on hole 3 on the way to a 1-under 34 front nine.

The Bears will tee off hole 1 between 7-7:48 a.m. PT alongside Colorado (T22, +24), Little Rock (T22, +24) and Washington State (24th, +25) on Saturday.
