Bears Spread It Around In Win At ASU
Reynoso Fills Up Box Score With Multiple Season Highs
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 5 California women's water polo team moved the ball around effectively in a wire-to-wire road victory on Saturday, defeating No. 10 Arizona State 10-8.
Winners in five of their last six games, the Golden Bears improve to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in MPSF play.
Seniors Mallory Reynoso and Maddie DeMattia led the Bears with two goals apiece. Reynoso also tied for game-high honors with three earned exclusions and added a pair of steals.
Cal's freshmen got things started with two early goals. Feline Voordouw opened the scoring 80 seconds in and Julia Bonaguidi doubled the lead at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter. DeMattia put away the final goal of the period on a power play to make it 3-1.
Juniors Rozanne Voorvelt and Elena Flynn scored in the final minutes of the opening half to give the Bears a 6-3 advantage. The Sun Devils (21-6, 2-3) responded with two goals in less than a minute to cut Cal's lead to one. That was one of five different occasions in which the home side was able to pull within a single goal, but it never found an equalizer.
Sophomore Abbi Magee and DeMattia both scored in the third quarter, sending Cal into the final frame leading 8-6. Reynoso put the Bears back ahead by three early in the fourth. With the defense holding strong down the stretch, senior Maryn Dempsey gave Cal its largest lead on a late dagger goal, making it 10-6 with 1:03 to go.
Senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams went for six saves and a pair of steals. Magee, redshirt sophomore Claire Rowell and Voorvelt finished with two assists each.
After playing their last three games on the road, the Bears will be back home for their next two contests, starting with an April 13 meeting with No. 1 UCLA. The following day, Cal will host No. 17 San Jose State on Senior Day. Both games will be at 1 p.m. PT.
