Cal’s Qualifiers Prepare For NCAA Indoor Championships
4 Bears Set For Toughest Competition Yet
BERKELEY – After getting its outdoor season underway last weekend, California track & field will officially close the book on its indoor campaign this week, at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston. The meet, which will be held at The Track at New Balance from March 7-9 and air on ESPN+, will feature four Cal athletes, each appearing in a different event.
Senior
Rowan Hamilton will be the first of the Golden Bear representatives to compete, entering the men's weight throw contest on Thursday (3 p.m. PT) as the 14 seed. A transfer from British Columbia, Hamilton competed in his very first indoor season this year and became the first Cal man in program history to qualify for the championships in the weight throw. He broke the all-time program record with a mark of 21.98m (72-1) in mid-February at the Don Kirby Invitational, then topped that mark again (22.36m/73-4) two weeks later at the Ken Shannon Invitational.
Two Cal men – senior
Skyler Magula and junior
David Foster – will appear for the Blue & Gold on Friday. Magula is the first Cal man since Clarence Phelps in 1997 to qualify in the pole vault; he will be the 11 seed in this year's contest, which is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. PT. After coming into the year in a tie for the all-time program record, Magula re-set that mark at the New Mexico Team Open to 5.51m (18-1), then bettered it to 5.53m (18-1.75) at the Ken Shannon Invitational. Foster's race, the 60m semifinal, is scheduled just over two hours later at 1:18 p.m. PT; he will attempt to move on to Saturday's final either by virtue of auto-qualification (finishing top two in his heat) or by being one of the next four best overall times. The first Cal male sprinter (and second Cal sprinter overall) to reach the NCAA Indoor Championships, Foster was assigned the 7 seed with a best time of 6.54 after a tremendous indoor campaign in which he lowered his own school record on four separate occasions.
Senior
Busola Akinduro will be the last of Cal's competitors to appear at the championships, with the women's triple jump scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. PT. Her best mark of 13.25m (34-5.75), which she set at the Don Kirby Invitational, moved her up to third in program history and clinched the 15 seed in Saturday's field. Akinduro is the only one of the Bears' qualifiers set to compete in an event in which Cal has already won an indoor title, with legendary alum Sheila Hudson winning both the triple and long jump championships in 1990.
