Distance Runners Head To Bryan Clay Invitational
5 Bears Set To Compete In 1500m Race
BERKELEY – California track & field will send a small group of distance runners to the Bryan Clay Invitational on Saturday, with five Golden Bears competing in the 1500m race at Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa.
Â
Freshman
Addie Johnson – Cal's top first-year woman in both the 1500m and 3000m this season – will kick things off for the Golden Bears, appearing in heat 12 of the women's Open C section. The squad's next competitor, fellow rookie
Justin Pretre, is slated to compete in the fifth heat of the men's 1500m Open B section; like Johnson for Cal's women, he is the Bears' top true freshman male runner in the 1500m and 3000m.
Â
Later Saturday evening, standout sophomore
Caden Carney and senior
Carrick Denker will race in the fourth heat of the men's Open A section. Earlier this season at the Hornet Invitational, Carney won the 3000m competition and earned a spot on Cal's all-time top-10 list with a time of 8:12.57 before winning the 1500m race the next day at 3:49.46. Denker, Cal's No. 2 male runner in both events, has also enjoyed a solid outdoor campaign, with his season-best 1500m time of 3:50.74 at just a second slower than Carney's. Redshirt freshman
Rowan FitzGerald will close out the night by racing in the eighth heat of the Open C section; he was the Bears' top finisher in the event at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic on March 29.
