COLUMBUS, Ohio – California men's gymnastics closed out its 2024 campaign on Saturday evening as 10 individual Golden Bear qualifiers shared the floor with the final six teams – eventual champion Stanford, Michigan, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Illinois and Ohio State – as well as several other individual competitors. Of those, it was senior Aidan Li who highlighted the evening for Cal by earning the first All-American honor of his career, posting a score of 14.266 that tied with Ohio State's Parker Thackston for seventh place in the competition.

"I'm glad that I finally got one," Li said.

Li is the first male Cal gymnast to be named an All-American since alumnus Caleb Rickard, who placed fifth on vault in 2021. He is the Bears' first pommel horse All-American in 10 years, following Donothan Bradley's seventh-place finish in 2014.

Cal's three all-arounders were led by senior Noah Newfeld, who finished just off the podium at a ninth-place 80.123 but qualified for the upcoming U.S. Gymnastics Championships, to be held this year from May 30-June 2 in Fort Worth, Texas. Newfeld's placement was his highest of all four of his career appearances at the NCAA Finals, the last three of which were in the all-around. Junior Tyler Shimizu (77.830) and sophomore Theodor Roald Gadderud (77.465) completed the all-around trio; Saturday marked the second-consecutive Finals appearance for both, having competed in the all-around (Shimizu) and on floor (Roald Gadderud) in 2023.

The 2024 NCAA Championships also marked the end of sixth-year senior Darren Wong's collegiate career. Wong, who had not appeared in the NCAA Final since his rookie year – first due to the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, then due to major injuries in three-straight years that kept him out of the gym – competed in two events – parallel bars and horizontal bar – earning scores of 13.833 and 13.266, respectively. Fellow seniors Chris Scales and Collin Cunane also closed out their careers on Saturday, each having reached the NCAA Final once before. Scales, appearing on rings for the second year in a row, bettered last year's score with a 13.300; Cunane, competing in the high bar final for the first time, earned a 13.000.

Junior Jasper Smith-Gordon, sophomore Khalen Curry and freshman Jaxon Mitchell each competed in their first NCAA Finals. Curry appeared on two events, starting off the meet with a 14.233 on vault and following up with a 13.666 on floor, while Smith-Gordon earned a score of 13.733 on vault and Mitchell 13.166 on rings.
