Alum Hakim McMorris Qualifies For U.S. Olympic Trials
BERKELEY - California track & field's multi-events squad closed out the decathlon and heptathlon at a sunny Edwards Stadium on Friday, where all four Golden Bear representatives ended the afternoon with massive personal bests.
Once again, alumnus
Hakim McMorris won four out of the day's five events to take first place in the decathlon competition with 8015 points, crossing the 8000-point threshold for the first time in his career and surpassing the automatic qualification mark for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June.
Sophomore
Seth Johnson crossed 7000 points for the first time in his career, totaling a second-place 7315 after notching personal bests in all five of Friday's events and finishing second in both the 110m hurdles (14.53) and the 1500m (4:39.32); his PR in the javelin was by over 14 feet at 54.83m (179-10). Redshirt freshman
Luke Buddie also surpassed 7000 points for the first time and set five personal records, taking third at 7073; he was helped by PRs of over a foot-and-a-half in the pole vault (4.20m/13-9.25), over 15 feet in the discus (36.33m/119-2) and over 10 seconds in the 1500m (4:53.07). Junior
Riley Knott finished fourth at a personal-best 6782 points, notching three individual PRs in the 100m hurdles (15.04), the pole vault (4.40m/14-5.25) and the 1500m 5:17.13, the latter of which was over 11 seconds faster than his previous top time.
"Trying to put 10 events together is always challenging, just keeping track of the variables and trying to be solid in every event," assistant coach
Dan Lefever, who leads the multi-events and vertical jumps, said. "For them to all do really well here at home is so cool. We had rough weather last year; fortunately the weather cooperated this year so they could show out today."
In the women's heptathlon, redshirt freshman
Mara Lampsas took fifth place with 4020 points, a new personal best. Her top finish of the day was in the javelin, where she posted a third-place mark of 30.51m (100-1).
