Newfeld Headed To U.S. Championships
2024 Grad Will Compete For Spot On Senior National Team
BERKELEY – After concluding his collegiate career at the NCAA Championships in April, California men's gymnastics alumnus
Noah Newfeld is set to compete this week at the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, hosted in Fort Worth, Texas, Thursday-Sunday at Dickies Arena. Newfeld will appear in the Senior Men's sessions on Thursday and Saturday, both of which are scheduled for 5 p.m. PT and can be viewed on Peacock (U.S.) or on the USA Gymnastics YouTube channel (outside the U.S.). Newfeld also participated at the 2022 U.S. Championships in Tampa, Florida; this year, the native of Plano, Texas, has the opportunity to compete on the nation's biggest stage less than an hour away from his hometown.
After combining scores from both days of competition, the top six athletes from each event as well as the all-around will receive special recognition. The U.S. Senior National Team will also be selected following the event, consisting of the top-five all-arounders, the next top five athletes in the Points Program rank order, and five additional athletes selected by various discretionary criteria. To earn points in the Points Program, a gymnast must finish in an event's top 10.
Newfeld finished ninth in the all-around final at the 2024 NCAA Championships with a score of 80.132. At the U.S. Championships, he will compete on floor, pommel horse, rings and parallel bars, starting with the latter in Rotation Two on Thursday.
A two-year team captain for the Golden Bears, Newfeld owns modern program top-10 scores on rings (14.150 – No. 3), parallel bars (14.350 – No. 5) and pommel horse (14.250 – No. 7). He was named the 2021 College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Rookie of the Year after a freshman campaign in which he won CGA Rookie of the Week honors three times. Following his senior season, Newfeld was presented with the department's Jake Gimbel Prize, awarded each year to a senior athlete with outstanding contributions in both academics and athletics.
