Cal To Send Sizable Contingent To U.S. Olympic Trials
34 Swimmers Look To Punch Ticket To Summer Games In Paris
Thirty-four swimmers affiliated with Cal are preparing to gather in Indianapolis to chase a dream at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Twenty-three men and 11 women will represent the Golden Bears at the trials, which run June 15-23 and serve as the official qualification event for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.
The top two finishers in each event earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team, provided he or she has posted an Olympic qualifying time.
Alumnus Ryan Murphy leads Cal's contingent on the men's side. The 2017 graduate will be vying to reach his third Olympic Games after earning six combined medals in 2016 and 2021 (including four gold medals). Murphy is the No. 1 seed in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events and is seeded No. 6 in the 100 butterfly. Murphy is the American record-holder in the 100 back and has reached the medal stand in both backstroke events in each of the last two Summer Olympics (including capturing gold in both strokes in 2016).
Rising seniors
Jack Alexy (100 freestyle) and
Dare Rose (100 butterfly) are also No. 1 seeds, while Alexy is also seeded second in the 50 free. Rose is the No. 8 seed in the 200 butterfly.
Recent graduate
Destin Lasco, who won the past three NCAA championships in the 200-yard back and also took the national crown last season in the 200 individual medley, is a top-10 seed in four different events – 200 back, No. 2; 100 back, No. 4; 100 free, No. 5; 200 IM, No. 6.
Trenton Julian, a 2022 Cal graduate, is competing in four events and is a top-10 seed in three of them – 200 fly, No. 4; 200 IM, No. 5; 100 fly, No. 10. Julian helped the Bears win two team NCAA championships during his time in Berkeley.
On the women's side, Abbey Weitzeil also will be looking to reach her third Olympic Games. The 2020 alumna is a four-time Olympic medalist and the No. 2 seed in both the 50 free and 100 free. She is also the U.S. Open record-holder in the 50 free.
Isabelle Stadden, who will return to Cal for a fifth season in 2024-25, is a member of the U.S. National Team in both backstroke events and finished as the NCAA runner-up in the 100 back last season. She also was a three-time Pac-12 champion in the 200 back. Stadden is the No. 5 seed in the 100 back and No. 6 in the 200 back.
Alumna
Rachel Klinker is the No. 6 seed in the 200 fly after an eye-opening performance at the World Aquatics Championships in February. Klinker swam a personal-best in the semifinals to earn the No. 2 seed and ended up finishing fourth overall. Klinker placed third in the 200 fly at last season's NCAA Championships and won the Pac-12 title in the event twice during her collegiate career.
