Murphy, Armstrong Advance To 100 Backstroke Finals
Armstrong Has Epic Race In Second Heat
INDIANAPOLIS – Day two of the 2024 United States Olympic Trials saw another string of stellar performances from the California men's swimming and diving team. Two more Golden Bears advanced to the finals, with Ryan Murphy and Hunter Armstrong moving on to Monday's finals in the 100-meter backstroke at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Murphy took first in the opening heat of the 100 back with a time of 52.64 - the first sub-53.00 of the year for the 2016 Olympic Champion. In the second heat, Armstrong, a former member of Cal's postgrad training group, had an epic finish to take second. Armstrong slipped on the blocks at the start of the race and was last at the turn. In his second 50, he turned in a time of 27.20 to finish with an overall mark of 53.57 – good enough for fourth in the semis overall.

Rising senior
Destin Lasco also raced in the second heat of the semifinals and finished 11th overall with a time of 54.47.

Brooks Curry, a current member of Cal's postgrad training group, finished third in his semifinal heat of the 200 freestyle and sixth overall with a time of 1:46.60. He will swim in Monday's final.

In the final of the 100 breaststroke,
Liam Bell was second at the turn and was gaining on the leader. The tight face finished with Bell finishing in fourth with a time of 59.40 – just under three-tenths behind winner Nic Fink. Fellow Bear alum
Luke Rodarte took seventh with a time of 59.85.
Rising seniors
Abby Herscu and
Alicia Henry competed in the women's 100 breaststroke. Herscu placed 25th with a time of 1:09.71 while Henry finished in 55th at 1:11.01.
Monday promises to be another busy day for the Bears. Murphy and Armstrong swim in the finals of the 100-back while
Isabelle Stadden competes in the prelims of the women's 100-meter backstroke.
