Cal All-American Looks For Spot On National Team
Rising junior
Joshua Thai will make history later this week when he becomes the first California men's diver ever to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Â
Thai, who will compete in the platform dive, will go against the country's best for the chance to represent Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.Â
Â
After a successful first two years with Cal, Thai has proven himself in more ways than one. During his freshman year, Thai became the first California diver in 16 years to score at the NCAA Championships, helping the Bears' men's swimming & diving team win its second consecutive national title. Thai also earned the first of two All-American honors after the season. As a sophomore, Thai appeared in the finals for all events of the Pac-12 Championships and took fourth place in the platform dive, qualifying him into the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. He took 10th with a program record score of 394.50.
Â
Men's platform preliminaries and semifinals take place Thursday at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center with the finals set for Saturday. The top two finishers earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Television coverage is provided by NBC, USA Network and Peacock.
Â
Cal has produced one Olympic diver in history - Sue Gossick, who won the gold medal in the springboard competition in 1968 after finishing fourth in the same event in 1964.
