Cal Named ITA All-Academic Team

The 2023-24 California men's tennis team was named an ITA All-Academic Team and five Golden Bears – rising seniors Alex Chang, Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright and rising freshmen Alex Aney and Timofey Stepanov – claimed ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction, the college tennis governing body announced this week. This marks the second consecutive ITA Scholar-Athlete honor for Wright and the first such accolade for his four teammates. Cal has garnered the ITA team award for the third straight season.

To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, a program must compile a team grade-point average of 3.2 or above. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must post a GPA of at least 3.5 for the current academic year.

Cal was one of 176 NCAA Division I programs named an ITA All-Academic Team, while the five Bears were among 1,059 NCAA Division I players named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

On Wednesday, Chang, Chen and Wright were also named to the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll for their work in the classroom over the past year. In April at the Cal Athletics Academic Honors Luncheon, men's tennis collected the Big C Society Most Improved GPA Award and Chang picked up the Golden Bear Achievement Award for notching the team's top GPA. Also, in December, the men's tennis team posted a 100% Graduation Success Rate – based on a six-year cohort – for the eighth straight year.
