Cal Contingent Represents Team USA In U20 World Trophy

Five Bears Named To U.S. Junior National Team Roster

EDINBURGH, Scotland – A contingent of California Golden Bears is representing the U.S. Under-20 National Team at the U20 World Rugby Trophy competition in Edinburgh, Scotland. Five rising juniors – Solomon Williams, Max Threlkeld, Miles Malone, Cade Crist and Rand Santos – have all been named to the traveling roster.

Williams, Threlkeld, Crist and Santos were all key starters for the Bears this past season during their sophomore year. Williams and Santos paired as the scrumhalf and flyhalf, respectively, for the majority of Cal's matches while Threlkeld wore the No. 12 shirt. Crist was the Bears' starting hooker and was a Rudy Scholz Award nominee. All four were also featured in last summer's U20 World Rugby Trophy series in Kenya.

Malone was an important reserve for the Blue & Gold, playing primarily as a lock this past season. This is Malone's first appearance with the U20 side at this international competition.

The U.S. U20 side qualified for the tournament after going 2-0 against North American rival, Team Canada, earlier this summer. The squad has now embarked upon a three-match pool round at Hive Stadium, beginning Tuesday with a 44-33 win over Team Netherlands. Crist started and co-captained the match and Williams, Threlkeld and Santos also earned first-15 nods, while Malone came off the bench in the second half.

Pool play continues this weekend, with a match against Team Uruguay scheduled for Sunday at 3:45 a.m. PT. A matchup with Kenya will take place the following Friday July 12 at 6:30 a.m. PT. Playoff rounds are slated to begin Wednesday, July 17. All matches can be streamed live and free on RugbyPass TV.
