Wright, Paul Named To Team Canada’s Olympic Roster
Both Golden Bear Alumni Headed To 2nd Straight Olympic Games
Two more California women's water polo alumni are headed to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, as Emma Wright and Kindred Paul were named to Team Canada's 13-person roster on Thursday.
This will be the second straight Olympics for Wright and Paul, who helped Canada finish in seventh place in Tokyo in 2021.
"As a team, we have been working very hard moving towards the Olympic Games," Wright said. "We have made lots of strides as a team and are hoping to be able to show that at the Games. We are getting more and more excited as the days count down!''
Wright – a national team veteran who has won numerous medals over the past nine years – was also named team captain. Since 2015, she has competed for Canada in five straight World Championships and taken home three straight silver medals at the Pan American Games.
One of six four-time ACWPC All-Americans in Cal's program history, Wright owns the Bears' third-highest career goals total, scoring 208 from 2017-22. Her 67 goals in 2019 rank eighth all time for a single season.
Paul has been a mainstay for Team Canada for the past five years. She won two silver medals alongside Wright at the Pan Ams, the first of which came in 2019 to clinch Canada's spot in the 2021 Tokyo Games. During her time at Cal, Paul was a 2016 All-American and 2015 MPSF All-Newcomer Team selection.
Joining Wright and Paul in Paris will be another Cal alum in Kitty Lynn Joustra, who was named to Team Netherlands' Olympic roster two weeks ago. This will be the fourth straight Olympic Games featuring at least three former Bears in the water.
Canada will be making its fourth Olympic appearance since Sydney 2000, when it earned its all-time best fifth-place finish. Women's water polo Olympic action will take place from July 27 to August 11 at the Aquatics Centre and Paris La Defense Arena, with Canada playing its first group stage match against Hungary on July 29.
