Cal Rowing Takes Spotlight In Paris

Maclean, New Zealand Men’s Four Earn Silver

PARIS - A dozen former California men's and women's rowers competed in either a final or a semifinal Thursday at the Stade nautique de Vaires-sur-Marne and two-time Pac-12 Men's Rower of the Year Ollie Maclean claimed Olympic silver with  New Zealand in the men's four with a time of 5:49.88.

Men's Rowing
A great start kept New Zealand in the top three over the first few hundred meters of the Men's Four A Final. The Kiwis pulled even with first-place USA at the 500-meter mark and even took the lead for a short time, but the Americans made one final move to pull ahead in the home stretch and finished .85 seconds ahead of second-place New Zealand and Maclean. Also competing in the race was fellow Golden Bear alumnus Jack Robertson, who took sixth place (6:00.35) with Australia.

Four Bears competed for four different countries in the Men's Eight Repechage 1, three of whom qualified for Saturday's Men's Eight A Final. Olav Molenaar and the Netherlands finished first in their Repechage with a 5:27.58 time. Frederik Breuer and Germany (5:29.17) took second, while Angus Dawson and Australia (5:31.50) earned the last spot in the final by finishing nearly five seconds ahead of fifth-place Italy and Gennaro Di Mauro (5:36.31).

Matin Mackovic took first in the Double Sculls B Final with a time of 6:13.85 and Tim Roth earned a third-place finish with Switzerland (6:02.61) in the Fours B Final.

Men's Golf
Colin Morikawa (USA) and Byeong Hun An (South Korea) began competition with the opening round on Le Golf National, placing 29th and 48th through 18 holes, respectively. Morikawa put away back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 to finish at 1-under-par 70. Hun An started off hot with three straight birdies on holes 1 through 3 before cooling off and carding a 1-over 72.

Women's Rowing
Norway's Inger Kavlie competed in the Double Sculls A Final and took sixth place at 6:58.41. Caileigh Filmer and Sydney Payne had an impressive 6:04.81 time for Canada in the eights repechage, placing second to qualify for the Eights A Final. USA representative Kara Kohler also made it to the Single Sculls A Final with a third-place semifinal time of 7:22.33.

Men's Swimming
A pair of Bears were separated by less than a tenth of a second in the 200-meter backstroke finals, as Keaton Jones (1:55.39) took fifth place for the USA and Hugo Gonzalez (1:55.47) finished sixth for Spain. Björn Seeliger (22.21), swiing for Sweden, recorded the 31st-best time in the 50 free.

Men's Water Polo
Thursday morning's battle of the Bears yielded some fantastic moments for fans of the California men's water polo program, as three-time NCAA champions Adrian Weinberg and Nikolaos Papanikolaou were pitted against each other for the first time on the international stage resulting in a 13-11 win by Greece over USA.

Weinberg and Papanikolaou traded punches in the opening half. After saving a shot in the final moments of the first quarter, Weinberg turned in perhaps the best goal of the tournament, firing in a length-of-the-pool skip shot to tie the game at 4-4. Later in the half, Papanikolaou became the game's first player to convert on a power play, knifing in a first-time redirect in front of goal over the head of his former teammate.

USA stayed in striking distance into the third quarter and led by a goal on two occasions. Despite a late Luca Cupido goal though, Greece pulled away with a 4-0 run to go up 12-9 and seal the win.

Women's Swimming
Leah Polonsky and Ayla Spitz were part of Israel's 4x200 free relay team that placed 11th today with a time of 7:55.99.

Field Hockey
Megan Rodgers Valzonis and USA fell in a hard-fought battle to Great Britain on Thursday, 5-2. The Americans will play their final pool play match against South Africa on Saturday.
