Rogers Adds Olympic Gold To Resume

Decorated Golden Bear Alumna Wins Hammer Throw For Canada

PARIS – Reigning world champion and California women's track and field alumna Camryn Rogers added Olympic champion to her resume Tuesday, winning the gold medal in the women's hammer throw at Stade de France.

Rogers took an early lead in the contest with her first attempt reaching 74.11 but found herself in second place at the end of the second round. Her third toss measured 74.47m which was enough to retake the lead, but only for a moment as the United States' Annette Nneka Echikunwoke took over the top spot with a 75.48m heave of her own. That mark held until the fifth round when Rogers regained the lead for good with a massive 76.97m throw.

Rogers' medal is Cal's fifth gold and 17th total of the Paris Olympic Games.

Women's Table Tennis
The Olympic Games have come to an end for Four-time Olympian Lily Zhang and the U.S. table tennis team's time in Paris came to an end with a 3-2 loss to Germany in the round of 16 Tuesday. Zhang, who won a pair of singles matches last week, went 1-1 in the team event. After dropping her first contest of the day to Annette Kaufmann 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-5), Zhang kept the Americans alive with a 3-1 (11-5, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6) win over Yuan Wan that tied the match at 2-2.

Germany would take the final singles matchup of the team event to advance to the quarterfinals.

Women's Water Polo
Alumna Kitty Lynn Joustra came off the bench to score a goal for the Netherlands in its 11-8 quarterfinal win over Italy. The Dutch will now face Spain in the semifinals on Thursday at 5:35 a.m. PT.

Former Bears Kindred Paul and Emma Wright saw their run in Paris ended with an 18-8 loss to Spain in the quarterfinals. Both alumni earned starts for the Canadians and Wright chipped in a goal.

U.S. assistant coach Chris Oeding, who played for Cal's men's program in the early 90's, also reached the women's semifinal round with a 5-4 win over Hungary. The Americans will now face Australia on Thursday at 10:35 a.m. PT.

Track & Field
Rogers wasn't the only Cal track and field alumna in action Tuesday, as Georgia Bell had success on the track for Great Britain in the first round of the 1500m. Bell finished second in her heat and ninth overall, crossing the finish line at 4:00.29 – the second fastest time of her career – to advance to Thursday's semifinal round at 10:35 a.m. PT.
