Mao Mushika Named ACC Player Of The Week

California women's tennis sophomore Mao Mushika was named the first ACC Player of the Week this season, the conference announced Tuesday, after she went unbeaten in singles and doubles in the recent Cal Winter Invitational. The Golden Bear was 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in the annual event.

Mushika is the first Bear to earn a weekly honor in Cal's new conference.

She defeated Cal Poly's Romane Moss 6-1, 6-1; Iman Khan of Saint Mary's 6-2, 6-3; and Cal Poly's Jessica MacCallum 6-3, 6-2 in singles over the three-day invite. In doubles, she partnered with Cami Brown to beat Cal Poly's MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets 6-4, paired with Katja Wiersholm to top the Mustangs' Amy Leather and Sarah MacCallum 6-2, and teamed with Greta Greco Lucchina to best Cal Poly's Mosse and Kennedy Buntrock 6-1.

The Ichinomiya, Japan, native – who has records of 12-3 in singles and 8-3 in doubles – capped a sterling fall half of the season by reaching the rounds of 32 in the NCAA singles and doubles championships in November.

Cal next competes in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 24 and 25 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
