NCAA Individual Championships Review
Katja Wiersholm's All-America campaign capped Cal's run at the NCAA individual championships in November at Baylor. The veteran Bear reached the NCAA Singles Championship round of 16 in the deepest run of her career. She was one of four Bears – including
Lan Mi,
Jessica Alsola and
Mao Mushika – to compete in Waco, Texas, with Mi and Mushika playing in singles for the first time and claiming first-round victories. Cal also tied for the most entrants (3) in the NCAA singles field.
Â
Cal swept its first-round singles matches, with Wiersholm defeating Wichita State's Xin Tong Wang 4-4 (ret.), Mi beating South Carolina's Kaitlyn Carnicella 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and Mushika besting Auburn's 82nd-ranked Angella Okutoyi 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, Wiersholm topped South Carolina's 10th-ranked Sarah Hamner 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(6), while Mi fell to Ohio State's 23rd-ranked Luciana Perry 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 and Mushika dropped a 6-2, 6-2 result to Stanford's fourth-ranked Connie Ma. In the round of 16, Wiersholm – who garnered All-America status by advancing to that round – fell to Auburn's 32nd-ranked DJ Bennett 7-6(5), 6-3.
Â
Alsola and Mushika – who had each played in previous NCAA Doubles Championship with different partners – earned more playing time together in their first season as a doubles pair by reaching the national tournament. The duo fell to UCLA's top-seeded Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.
