Bears Win Second Sevens Tournament Title

Cal’s Two Sides Finish 8-0 At West Coast 7s At Stanford

PALO ALTO – California rugby's two squads had a perfect day at the West Coast 7s at Stanford, combining for eight wins and no losses and seeing the Golden Bears' top side lift the trophy at the end of the tournament with their second title of the fall campaign. Oliver Teague was named Man of the Tournament with his six-try performance.

Cal's top side put up a dominant performance, breezing past Stanford (66-0), Oregon (43-0) and San Diego (47-7) in the pool play round to earn a spot in the championship match. The Bears jumped out to an early lead in the Cup final, taking a 36-0 score into halftime before ultimately shutting out Grand Canyon, 55-0, in the end.

The Bears' secondary side showed major improvement from its last outing, going unbeaten through the pool play round with four wins. Last time out, the developmental squad went 1-2 at the WC7s in Los Angeles on Sept. 27. This weekend, the young Cal squad beat Oregon (24-10), UCLA (35-10), Grand Canyon (38-5) and San Diego (31-5).

Teague led Cal I in tries, followed by Nate Comiskey with five tries, three of which he scored in the second half of the Cup final. Rand Santos was 12-of-15 on conversion attempts and added a pair of tries to lead the Bears in scoring with 34 total points.

Noa Grasse led Cal II with five tries and Oliver Bamford, Gur Levy and Cormac Saint each contributed three. Saint was 8-of-11 on conversions to tally 31 total points, the most of anyone on the Cal II squad.

Cal will look to sweep the West Coast 7s circuit in two weeks' time as the Bears head back down to southern California for the WC7s SoCal on Oct. 25-26. The final iteration of the tournament will be a two-day competition hosted at the Oceanside Sports Complex in San Diego.
