Cal Heads South For Fall Sevens Finale

Bears Look To Sweep West Coast 7s Circuit With Third Tournament Title

BERKELEY – California rugby will travel to San Diego for its final sevens tournament of the fall this weekend, with the Golden Bears looking to sweep the West Coast Sevens circuit and capture their third tournament title of the campaign. The WC7s SoCal will be hosted at the Oceanside Sports Complex on Saturday and Sunday. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. PT each day, with the championship match set for Sunday at 1:50 p.m.

Cal will be in Pool A, along with San Diego State, UCLA and Long Beach State. Pool B will be made up of Grand Canyon, University of San Diego, Claremont and Mira Costa. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the Sunday semifinals.

Cal will send its top side to the tournament, which has gone undefeated in sevens play this year and claimed titles at both the WC7s Los Angeles and Stanford competitions. San Diego native Solomon Williams was named tournament MVP in Los Angeles after recording four tries in two matches, while Oliver Teague earned the same individual recognition at the Stanford tournament with his team-leading six tries in three matches played.

Last time out, the Bears' top side rolled past Stanford (66-0), Oregon (43-0) and San Diego (47-7) in pool play before defeating Grand Canyon, 55-0, in the Cup final. Cal's B-side was also unbeaten in the tournament, claiming victories over Oregon (24-10), UCLA (35-10), Grand Canyon (38-5) and San Diego (31-5).

A similar roster of players will represent the Blue and Gold this weekend, with leading points-scorer Rand Santos expected to take the pitch alongside fellow top contributors Max Threlkeld, Bryan Bogne and Michál de Beer, among others. Cormac Saint, Quinn Spieker, Noa Grasse and Gur Levy all got the call-up from the Bears' B-side to join the travel party to San Diego.
