No. 5 Cal Impresses On Day 1 Of Tri-Meet
Bears Record 4 Top-10 Times
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 5 California women's swimming & diving team got off to a hot start Friday with a handful of strong performances on day one of its tri-meet with No. 3 Stanford and No. 18 Arizona State at Avery Aquatics Center in Stanford. The Golden Bears lead ASU 132-66 but trail the Cardinal 122.5-73.50.
The day started with two historical finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle as freshman
Ella Cosgrove (9:35.61) won the event with the third-fastest time in program history and sophomore
Camille Henveaux (9:38.18) took second with the fourth-fastest time. Cosgrove followed that performance up by taking third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.80.
Another freshman etched her name into Cal's top-10 list as well as
Claire Weinstein took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with the seventh-fastest time ever recorded by a Bear. She has now cracked the list twice in as many meets having notched a 4:37.14 in the 500-yard freestyle at the Triton Invitational that was good for fifth all-time.
Sophomore
Mary-Ambre Moluh (51.98) and freshman
Teagan O'Dell (52.59) got some points on the board for the Bears in their first race of the weekend finishing second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. Both times are below this year's NCAA standard of 52.65. O'Dell went on to place second again in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:07.94, which is 5.74 seconds faster than the qualifying time.
The underclassmen weren't done yet as freshman
Silje Slyngstadli had arguably the best swim of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke. In her first collegiate meet, the Triton Invitational, Slyngstadli hit the NCAA qualifying standard in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events and then followed that up today by recording the second-fastest time in Cal history touching the wall at 58.70 to place second. Freshman
Elle Scott took fourth with a time of 59.56, which is 0.74 seconds under the NCAA qualifying time.
Sophomore
Mia West split first place in the 100-yard freestyle with Stanford's Gigi as they both came in at 47.89, which is also below this year's NCAA standard set at 48.60. Weinstein was right behind them in fourth with a time of 48.33.
Cal finished the day with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with its A team of West, Moluh, Cosgrove, and Weinstein clocking a time of 3:13.08 that hits the NCAA qualification standard. Moluh, the second leg, had the best split on the team at 47.72.
The three teams will now head to Spieker Aquatic Center for the second and final day of the tri-meet tomorrow. First event is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Berkeley
