SAN DIEGO – The California rugby team went unbeaten on the first day of the West Coast Sevens SoCal tournament at the Oceanside Sports Complex in San Diego. The Golden Bears rolled past San Diego State, UCLA and Long Beach State to top their pool and enter the Sunday semifinals as the Pool A top seed.
 
Cal's defense remained solid, as it has been throughout the entire sevens campaign thus far. The Bears never gave up more than one unconverted try in a single match and posted one shutout performance.
 
The Bears got off to a strong start with a 44-5 win over SDSU. Cal scored eight total tries with Masi Koi, Jack Byszio and Seamus Deely each contributing a pair.
 
Cal shut out UCLA in its second match of the day, scoring seven unanswered tries. Max Threlkeld led the Bears in scoring with a brace of tries.
 
The Bears captured a 43-5 win over LBSU to end the day, with Koi posting another multi-try performance with two in the first half of the contest. Rand Santos was 4-of-5 on conversion kicks in windy conditions.
 
Cal will return to the pitch tomorrow for the semifinal round, looking to capture its third WC7s title of the fall sevens circuit. The Bears will face University of San Diego at 10:20 a.m. PT. The winner of that contest will advance to the College Cup Championship match at 1:50 p.m.
