No. 6 Cal Stays Hot On Day 2 Of Minnesota Invite

Cal Takes Top Spot In Every Race

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 6 California women's swimming & diving team won every race on Friday, the second day of the Minnesota Invitational.

With two full days in the books the Golden Bears lead the pack with 1,237 points followed by the host Golden Gophers (1.143.5) in second, Harvard (855.5) in third, Denver (629.5) in fourth, Rutgers (547.5) in fifth, and UNLV (434) in sixth.

Cal once again saw some stellar performances in the preliminary rounds winning all but once race and earning 17 spots in 'A' finals. That momentum carried over to the evening as the Bears won every 'A' final and had 14 podium finishes.

The night session began with the 200-yard medley relay team of Mary-Ambre Moluh (back), Silje Slyngstadli (breast), Annie Jia (fly), and Mia West (free) finishing more than three seconds faster than the next team at 1:34.88. That mark is an NCAA qualifying time and was 0.28 seconds short of cracking the program's top-10 list.

West added to her already impressive weekend by dropping 2.32 seconds from her prelim performance to win the 100 fly. Her 51.12 is the ninth-fastest in Cal history and 10th-fastest in the NCAA this season. Jia (51.50) took second and Lilou Ressencourt (52.24) finished fourth and both had NCAA cuts.

The Bears swept the 400 IM podium with a trio of qualifying times. Teagan O'Dell (4:08.14) finished on top followed by Alexa McDevitt (4:08.21) in second and Kathryn Hazle (4:09.63) in third.

A pair of freshmen headed up the 100 breaststroke with a pair of NCAA qualifying times with Slyngstadli (59.58) finishing first and Elle Scott (1:00.10) grabbing second. Abby Herscu touched the wall at 1:01.23 to take fourth and Arielle Brotman was just behind her in fifth at 1:01.91.

In the very pool that she broke Cal's all-time record in last year, Moluh came out on top again in the 100 backstroke placing first with a time of 50.61, which would be good for ninth in program history and is the eighth-fastest time in the nation this season. Teagan O'Dell (52.05) finished just behind her in second with an NCAA qualifying time of her own.

Cal capped off the swimming events by winning the 800 free relay with O'Dell, Camille Henveaux, Ressencourt, and McDevitt recording a time of 7:06.44.

On the diving side Arianna Drake climbed to the podium placing third on the three-meter springboard. After scoring a 275.50 in the prelims, which put her in seventh place, the junior posted 3:09.70 in the final to earn some hardware.

The Bears are back in the pool tomorrow for the final day of the meet which features the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay, and platform diving.
