Lauzon Repeats As ACC Gymnast Of The Week
Senior Collects Third Award In 6 Weeks
An all-around win and a walk-off perfect 10 on the floor exercise in the first Big Meet of the ACC era were enough to give senior
Mya Lauzon of the No. 7 California women's gymnastics team her third ACC Gymnast of the Week award, the conference announced Tuesday.
Lauzon, who became the first Golden Bear to win the award Jan. 7 and the first repeat winner last week, is now also the first to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks. Cal has won five conference honors in the first six weeks of its inaugural ACC season.
Lauzon led Cal to a 197.550-197.400 win over undefeated No. 13 Stanford on Friday night in dramatic fashion. In the final rotation the Bears trailed the Cardinal by 0.025 points and needed a 9.875 or better from the senior who has yet to have a sub-9.90 score on floor this season. Lauzon decided not to leave any doubts and performed the best routine of her career to earn a 10 and win the rivalry meet.
With 10s on the vault and balance beam in her last two seasons, Lauzon became the first Bear in program history to earn a perfect score on three different events. She is the first ACC gymnast to record a 10 and is now just one perfect uneven bars routine away from the "gym slam," which would put her in elite company.
The Kent, Washington, native's flawless floor routine was just the crescendo of an already impressive night as all four of her routines scored a 9.9 or higher. She won the all-around with a score of 39.750, which is the second-highest mark in the nation this season and is tied for third all time in Cal history. The senior also won the uneven bars (9.925) and a share of the vault title (9.90) while placing third on the balance beam (9.925).
