Bears Show Out On Floor Exercise

FORT WORTH, Tex. –The No. 7 California women's gymnastics team took home the Metroplex Challenge title Friday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center with a team score of 197.050. Utah State (196.475) finished in second place and Texas Woman's (195.375) came in third.

The Golden Bears (11-2) showed off the full potential of their depth with 10 different gymnasts competing routines, including a debut on the uneven bars for junior Miki Aderinto. Cal won six individual event titles with senior Maddie Williams and junior eMjae Frazier each collecting a 39.475 to split the all-around.

With Cal taking on the events in Olympic order, the night began on vault – an apparatus that all three teams struggled on as only one 9.90 was achieved. Four Bears secured scores of 9.825 or better including freshman Mya Wiley who posted a career-high 9.85 and earned a share of silver with Frazier.

Cal trailed Utah State 49.275-49.100 after the first rotation, but quickly took the lead with its best bars score of the season at 49.425. Williams won the event with a 9.925 and Aderinto anchored the lineup with an impressive 9.90 in her first collegiate bars routine to place second. Each season of her three-year career, the junior has debuted on a new event, but tonight's routine was the top score of her career on any apparatus. Sophomore Annalise Newman-Achee posted a career high of her own with a 9.875 and joined senior Mya Lauzon in a five-way tie for third place.

The Bears had a tough third rotation, scoring a 48.925 on the balance beam, but still managed to medal with Frazier and Williams notching a 9.875 to split the event title four ways. Their lowest team score of the night put them in a hole heading to floor as the Aggies took a 147.575-147.450 lead into the final rotation.

With the meet on the line the third-ranked floor exercise team in the nation showed up once again putting up a 49.600, its second highest event score of the year. Sophomore Kyen Mayhew led off the rotation with a solid 9.875 that would be dropped. Freshman CJ Keuneke, senior Ella Cesario, and Frazier split third place at 9.900 and Williams took second with a season high 9.925. After earning her first career 10 on floor last week, Lauzon nearly had a repeat performance scoring a 9.975 to close out the meet.

Cal has now posted a 197 or better in three straight meets, with two of those scores coming on the road. National Qualifying Scores (NQS) are set to take effect following this weekend's events.

The Bears, who are an undefeated 3-0 in ACC contests, now return home to host Pitt in their Belonging Meet on Sunday, Feb. 23. First routine is set for 2 p.m. on ACCNX/ESPN+.
