Johnson Leads Heptathletes After Day 1
Bears Add 4 Top 10s At New Mexico Collegiate Classic
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The California track & field team began its third meet of the season at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday, continuing its streak of top performances with a quartet of program top-10 entries, an individual event win and an additional standout multi-event outing against many of the nation's top teams.
NCAA-leading weight thrower
Giavonna Meeks took home her third event title of the season, posting a throw of 23.52m (77-2) to win the competition by exactly one meter. In the same event, teammate
Adrianna Coleman added nearly a foot to her personal best with a mark of 19.80m (64-11.5) to improve her own program No. 7 entry.
Heptathlete
Seth Johnson sits atop the standings with 3226 points after recording top-three finishes in all four Day-One events, equaling or improving his career best in each. After matching his PR with a winning time of 6.92 in the 60m, he followed that up with a personal-best 6.98m (22-10.75) in the long jump, improving his old mark by seven inches and finishing second overall, then posted a mark of 12.82m (42-0.75) in the shot put to better his PR by over two-and-a-half feet for third place. Johnson closed out the day with a win in the high jump, recording a new personal record on the first try before improving to 2.05m (6-8.75) on his third attempt at the bar.
Fellow multi-eventer
Torre Anderson, competing in the pentathlon, posted a personal-best time of 8.70 in the 60m hurdles on the way to a five-event total of 3550 points, improving her own program No. 5 mark. High jumper
Ashanti Elie likewise climbed into a tie for fifth on an all-time program list, recording a mark of 1.73m (5-8), while
Will Siemens placed second in Section B of the men's pole vault with a massive PR of 5.24m (17-2.25) that was good for seventh-best in program history and his first time crossing the five-meter barrier.
Freshman
Paige Porter continued her solid indoor season by posting a collegiate personal best for the fourth-straight week, finishing the 200m in 24.95.
Ali Sahaida, who ranks fifth in indoor school pole vault history, made her season debut with a mark of 4.02m (13-2.25).
