BERKELEY – The 15th-ranked California men's tennis team captured its fifth straight victory at home and third consecutive ACC win Thursday in a 5-2 result over Louisville at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Theo Dean clinched the win for the Golden Bears, who improved their record to 10-2 (5-2 ACC), including 5-0 at home.

Louisville dropped to 6-11 (0-5).

Cal was dominant in doubles. Dean and Derrick Chen started off strong to defeat Enrique Pena and Hamza El Amine 6-1 on court two. Alex Chang and Carl Emil Overbeck – playing for the first time together this season – also topped Kosuke Nakanishi and Andre' Steinbach 6-1 on court one to secure the doubles point for the Bears.

In singles, Chen won his third straight match when he bested Miguel Avendano 6-0, 6-2 to give Cal a 2-0 lead. Freshman Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski followed with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Nakanishi to make the score 3-0.

Later leading 3-1, Cal got the clincher from Dean on court two, where the 36th-ranked Bear defeated Wil Mayew 6-4, 6-2 to make the score 4-1. The teams split the last two matches to complete the 5-2 result.

"Good doubles and good energy in doubles," said Kris Kwinta, Cal's Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis. "We delivered. We decided to play the match out, so I knew there were going to be some tighter matches. But that's good. We want to keep developing and putting guys in situations where they can grow. I was hoping for some tighter matches, and that's what happened. Great wins by Theo, Changer, who's been playing really well on one, Lechno, who came back from 2-4 down in the second set to win his match, and Dezza (Derrick Chen), who played the cleanest match of anybody.

"I'm looking forward to the Saturday match with Notre Dame and to how we can improve in a couple of spots."

Cal hosts the 55th-ranked Fighting Irish on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
