Cal Track & Field Trio Named All-Americans
Meeks Earns First-Team Honors; Foster, Burns Named To Second Team
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Four members of the California track & field team appeared at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Friday, seeking glory and competing against the best of the best at the NCAA Indoor Championships. All three Golden Bears who competed in single events earned All-America status, while Cal's lone multi-eventer will finish up Saturday.
Redshirt sophomore and reigning ACC Champion
Giavonna Meeks was no stranger to the big stage, having finished sixth in the NCAA Indoor Championships weight throw competition last year while competing for Vanderbilt. Her familiarity was apparent as she improved two spots to a fourth-place finish (23.00m/75-5.5), picking up her second-career First-Team All-America nod. Meeks was one of four women to surpass the 23-meter barrier and one of five to beat the previous facility record of 22.87m (75-0.5), set by North Dakota's Kenna Curry earlier this year. The title went to Taylor Kesner of Wisconsin, who launched the weight a personal-best 23.50m (77-1.25), while VCU's Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir took second with her own PR of 23.19m (76-1) and Illinois's Phethisang Makhethe claimed bronze at 23.08m (75-8.75).
Fellow ACC Champion
David Foster earned his fourth-career Second-Team All-America recognition as the senior posted a 15th-place time of 6.62 in the 60m prelims. Pole vaulter
Tyler Burns, a redshirt junior, posted the highest clearance of any Cal man at the NCAA Indoor Championships (5.46m/17-11) to finish 12th in the competition and reach Second-Team All-America status for the first time in his career. ACC Champion Simen Guttormsen of Duke claimed the pole vault title with a mark of 5.71m (18-8.75), which also marked a new facility record.
Indoor redshirt sophomore
Seth Johnson competed in the first four events of the heptathlon, totaling 3035 points at the end of Day One. His best event of the day was the 60m hurdles, where he placed sixth with a time of 6.98, before following up with marks of 6.76m/22-2.25 in the long jump, 12.11m/39-8.75 in the shot put and 1.97m/6-5.5 in the high jump.
