SANTA CRUZ – California freshman Ziqin (Eric) Zhou nearly made Western Intercollegiate history with a 6-under-par 64 in the second round at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Golden Bear rookie was one stroke off the tournament's low 18-hole record of 63, accomplished by just eight golfers – including Cal alumnus Aaron Du, who did so in the first round in 2023 – in the event's 78-year history. Zhou had a new record in his sights as he was 8-under-par through 17 holes played, but carded a double bogey on No. 18 to drop back to 6 under.

Cal (708, +8) was unable to capitalize on the individual effort by Zhou, dropping back two spots to eighth place with a 7-over-par 357 in the second round. Pepperdine (-6), San Diego State (-4), Arizona (-3), Nihon University (-1) and Stanford (-1) own the top five after 36 holes.

Zhou (E) rebounded from a first-round 76, climbing 63 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 17th with his 64. The freshman shot a 29 on the front nine holes with birdies on 2, 3, 5 and 6 as well as an eagle on 9. He added another pair of birdies on 12 and 17.

Junior Daniel Heo shot even-par 70 to remain at 3-under-par for the tournament despite dropping back four spots into a tie for 11th.
