Kort Schubert Elected To U.S. Rugby Hall Of Fame

Cal Athletics Hall of Famer Becomes 16th Bear To Earn Distinction

SAN DIEGO – California rugby alumnus and Cal Athletics Hall of Famer, Kort Schubert, has been elected to the U.S. Rugby Hall of Fame as part of its 2025 class. Schubert is the 16th Golden Bear to join the esteemed list of USA Rugby legends.

A California product, Schubert was a 6-foot-3, 240-pound backrower who came to Berkeley from Jesuit High School in Sacramento. There, he was a dual-sport standout in rugby and football.

During his time at Cal, Schubert was a five-time national champion, five-time All-American and won the Woodley award for the nation's best collegiate rugby player in back-to-back seasons in 2001 and '02. He captained the Bears and was named Most Valuable Player of the title match in his senior year, in addition to being named Cal Male Student Athlete of the Year by the Daily Californian. In 2021, his legacy as a Cal great was cemented by his enshrinement in the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame.

Schubert began his career with the U.S. National Team in 2000 while he was still an undergraduate at Cal. He made his debut on June 3, 2000, against Japan in the Pacific Rim Championship when he was just 20 years old.

Over the span of his eight-year career as an Eagle, he was capped 49 times and made 50 appearances for the United States. Schubert's streak of 42 consecutive international matches is believed to be the American record. He also captained the Eagles in 2004 for 17 consecutive matches, which is the second-longest streak in Eagles history. Under Schubert's leadership, the U.S. reached its highest world ranking of the era (No. 14).

Highlights of Schubert's international career include four starts in the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. He was the leading American try scorer in the tournament, scoring tries against Fiji, Japan and France.

Schubert also played on professional contracts in the United Kingdom, making appearances with the Northampton Saints (2003-04) and the Cardiff Blues (2004-06).

Schubert returned to Cal in an assistant coach role from 2004-07, helping the Bears to national titles in each year. He has worked with the Danville Oaks rugby club since 2015, and assumed the head coach role in 2023 to help develop several young rugby players who have matriculated through the Cal program.

"Kort was a player for the ages and an individual we are deeply proud of," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "He's a Cal man."

Schubert, along with six other USA rugby legends, will be officially enshrined on July 18 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. in a formal ceremony. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with the USA Eagles' double-header on July 19 when the men's side takes on England in a test match and the women's squad faces off with Fiji at Audi Field.
