Rugby Hauls In Academic Honors In 2024-25
National Champions Recognized For Achievement In The Classroom
BERKELEY – Fresh off its national championship performance this past weekend, the California rugby team returned to Berkeley to collect a wealth of academic honors at the annual Cal Academic Honors Luncheon on Tuesday afternoon. The event was hosted by the Athletic Study Center at the Field Club at California Memorial Stadium to celebrate the top academic performers from across all Intercollegiate Athletic teams.
Recognition is reserved for sophomores through seniors and bestows scholar-athlete status to the finest of Cal's student-athletes during the 2024-25 school year. Nineteen rugby players achieved this status and invitations to the event. Those players were:
Emmett Cook,
Cade Crist,
Michál de Beer,
Mack Fell,
Greg Hemming,
Joe Kirsten,
Luke Leddy,
Miles Malone,
Oliver Newall,
Jack Openshaw,
Felix Pollmann,
Griffin Rudy,
Rand Santos,
Elias Smith,
Quinn Spieker,
Max Threlkeld,
J.P. Vinter,
Brady Weingart and
Toby Wu.

Malone was recognized with the Golden Bear Achievement Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade-point average on his or her respective team. Malone, a junior, is double majoring in art history and business administration.

"Cal is a challenging place to compete academically," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "To excel to the honors level is indeed a significant achievement. We're very proud of these boys."
