Former Bear Rowed In Netherlands Four
BERKELEY – Former California men's rower Wibout Rustenburg ('21) led a contingent of 10 current and former Golden Bears at the World Rowing Cup I last weekend in Varese, Italy. Rustenburg helped the Netherlands' men's four take home the bronze on Sunday. His crew had the third-fastest time of the opening heats and finished second in its semifinal to earn a berth in the A final, where it finished in 05:49.97, just a half-second behind second place.
Rustenburg also competed in the European Rowing Championships earlier this month in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where he was part of the Netherlands' men's eight that won the silver medal.
Several other Bears also advanced to the men's four A final along with Rustenburg.
Nathan Phelps ('24) and Christian Tabash ('23) were part of the United States crew that finished in fifth place. Campbell Crouch ('23) raced for New Zealand, which finished third in its semifinal before placing sixth in the A final.
Senior
Alexander Baroni and
Harry Manton ('25) joined alum Jack Robertson ('21) as part of the Australian men's eight that finished fifth in the A final.
Rounding out the Bears who competed over the weekend were Jack Cleary ('18), who finished sixth in the double sculls C final, Olav Molenaar ('22), who advanced to the men's pair A final and placed sixth for the Netherlands and senior
Tim Roth, who placed second in the D final of the men's single sculls.
