Bears Shine On Rowing World Stage

Morton Wins Gold At U23 World Championships

The Golden Bears have enjoyed a successful summer so far on the world stage. Six of the 10 members of the California men's rowing team who competed at this past weekend's U23 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland, walked away with medals highlighted by Wilson Morton, who helped the U.S. win gold in the men's four.

In addition, Angus Dawson and former Bear Jack Robertson rowed for Australia and tied the course record (5:53) to win the coveted Grand Challenge Cup, the oldest and best-known event at the annual Henley Royal Regatta at the River Thames in England earlier this month. They ended Great Britain's four-year winning streak of the event.

Also medaling in the men's four at the U23 was Pablo Moreno, who earned a silver for Spain. In the men's eight, Matthew Waddell won silver for New Zealand while the trio of Noah Anger, Johannes Benien and Maximilian Pfautsch aided Germany to the bronze.

Morton and the U.S. four powered its way to the A final by easily winning its heat and semifinal rounds. In the A Final, the U.S. took the lead early with Great Britain inches away through the first half of the race, but the U.S. was able to pull away in the third 500 meters to hold off any charges and secure the gold. Moreno and Spain were in third place going into the final half of the race but made a surge in the third 500 meters to move into second place and hold onto silver.

In the men's eight, Great Britain jumped out to a commanding lead and didn't look back. Waddell and New Zealand ended up battling it out with Anger, Benien and Pfautsch with Germany along with Jeremy Beale and Australia for the remaining podium positions. They were all within a half second of each other at the 1,000-meter mark before New Zealand made a push over the third 500 meters to put it comfortably in second place, with Germany holding off Australia to come in third.

Rounding out the list of Bears who competed were Jeremy Beale (Australia) and Xavier Gagnon (U.S.), who placed fourth and fifth in the men's eight respectively, Osian James (Great Britain) who placed fourth in the men's four and Nat Gauden (Great Britain), who finished fourth for Great Britain in the C Final of the men's double sculls.
