Cal Water Polo Well-Represented At Worlds
11 Golden Bears Representing 7 Countries To Take Part In Singapore
Eleven past and present California water polo student-athletes will compete in the 2025 World Aquatics Championships that begin later this week in Singapore.
Seven women – alumnae
Isabel Williams (USA), Cecily Turner (Great Britain), Cassidy Ball (Great Britain) and Kitty Lynn Joustra (The Netherlands) and current players
Julia Bonaguidi (USA), Eszter Varro (Hungary) and
Holly Dunn (New Zealand) – will represent their respective countries on the biggest stage while alumni Adrian Weinberg (USA), Nikolaos Papanikolaou (Greece) and Lazar Andric (Montenegro) as well as current student-athlete Dominic Brown (USA) will participate on the men's side.
The tournament begins Thursday with the women's competition with the United States taking on China and The Netherlands meeting Argentina in Group B. Great Britain goes up against France in Group D.
Women's play continues Friday and the men's competition commences, with the New Zealand women playing Italy in Group A and Hungary's women's squad taking on Greece in Group C. On the men's side Friday, group play begins with the United States meeting Canada in Group C. Montenegro and Greece face off in Group D on Saturday.
Group play continues through July 18 before the round of 16 begins. The gold-medal matches are July 23 (women) and July 24 (men).
Joustra, a two-time Olympian and three-time All-American at Cal, will be making her fifth World Championships appearance. It will be the fourth World Championships for Weinberg, a three-time NCAA champion for the Bears and two-time All-American who made his Olympic debut for Team USA last summer in Paris.
