Bears Well Represented At Senior World Championships
10 Cal Men’s Rowing Alumni To Compete For Various Countries
California men's rowing will have a large presence at the 2025 Senior World Rowing Championships, which will be held Sept. 21-28 at the Shanghai Water Sports Centre in Shanghai, China. Ten former Golden Bears will represent Cal in various events, competing for six different countries on the world stage.
Â
For the United States, Christian Tabash ('23) and Gus Rodriguez ('23) will each compete in both the men's four and men's eight events, while Nathan Phelps ('24) will join the men's quadruple sculls crew.
Â
Tabash is no stranger to international competition, having raced in his first Olympics for the U.S. in 2024 in the men's eight. He helped Team USA take home a bronze medal, which was the first medal in the event since 2008 for the U.S., and 17th all time. He also earned a bronze medal in the men's coxed four at the 2021 U23 World Rowing Championships and, most recently, was part of the United States' men's crew that finished in fifth place at the 2025 World Rowing Cup I earlier this summer in Varese, Italy.
Â
Rodriguez, a member of Cal's 2023 IRA National Championship V8+ squad, made an appearance at the 2022 World Rowing Championships in the men's four and traveled as an alternate for Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Â
Phelps joined Tabash on that same World Rowing Cup I crew for the U.S. earlier this summer and is poised to make his first appearance at a Senior World Rowing Championships this weekend. While at Cal as a graduate student in 2024, Phelps split his time in the 1V8+ and the 2V8+ boats, which beat Stanford in the Big Row, finished second at the Pac-12 Championships and took home fourth-place at the IRA National Championships.
Â
A trio of former Bears – Jack Robertson ('21),
Angus Dawson ('25) and
Harry Manton ('25) – will join the men's eight crew for Australia. Robertson and Dawson both rowed for Australia and tied the course record (5:53) to win the coveted Grand Challenge Cup at the 2025 Henley Roya Regatta this past summer, ending Great Britain's four-year winning streak of the event. Both also competed for Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, with Robertson a part of the men's four crew in his first Olympic Games appearance while Dawson rowed in the men's eight boat, in what was his second Olympics appearance after making his debut for Team Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Games. Dawson was a two-time national champion at Cal, helping the V8+ boats to national titles in 2022 and 2023.
Â
Manton and Robertson both competed for Australia in the men's eight at the 2025 World Rowing Cup I and II competitions, helping the crew claim a silver medal in the latter. Manton spent four years with the Bears, helping Cal's varsity eight claim the MPSF championship in its inaugural season as part of the conference this past year. Manton has previously featured for Australia at the 2023 and 2024 U23 World Rowing Championships
Â
Martin Mackovic ('18) will compete in the double sculls for Serbia. Mackovic is a two-time Olympian who competed for Serbia in the 2020 Tokyo Games and in Paris in 2024. He has also compiled gold medals at the 2021 World Rowing Cup I and bronze medals at the 2022 World Rowing Cup I and III since graduating from Cal.
Â
Campbell Crouch will represent New Zealand in the men's four event. He raced for New Zealand at the 2025 European Rowing Championships, helping the men's eight crew to a sixth-place finish. Crouch was a part of Cal's V8+ boats that claimed back-to-back IRA national championship titles in 2022 and 2023.
Â
Finally, Wibout Rustenberg ('21) will represent Netherlands in the men's eight. He helped Netherlands take home bronze in the men's four at the World Rowing Cup I this past June and was a part of the Netherlands' men's eight that won the silver medal at the 2025 European Rowing Championships.
