Bears Open Fall Sevens Campaign In Los Angeles
Cal To Send Two Squads To WC7s Tournament
BERKELEY – California rugby will open its fall sevens campaign at the West Coast 7s Los Angeles on Saturday, in the first of three WC7s tournaments on the Golden Bears' slate this autumn. The full day of action will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. PT at Dignity Health Sports Park, with the Cup Final set for 3:20 p.m.
Â
The Bears will send two squads to the tournament – Cal I and Cal II – the latter of which is a reserve side of the program this year. Cal will bring a full roster of 30 players between the two sides, with representation from all class levels.
Â
Last year, Cal participated in two WC7s tournaments hosted in Claremont and San Diego. The Bears went undefeated on the sevens circuit and brought home both tournament titles.
Â
Saturday's tournament will begin with a pool play round. Cal I will be a part of Pool A, which includes Long Beach State, Western Washington, and the top side from San Diego State. Cal II will play in Pool B along with University of San Diego, UCLA and USC. Pool C features Arizona State, Claremont, Loyola Marymount, and secondary sides from SDSU and USD.
Â
Cal's players this weekend will feature a mix of experienced student-athletes and newcomers. The Bears' top side is likely to see returners and 2025 D1A National XVs Championship match startersÂ
Max Threlkeld,Â
Bryan Bogne,
Masi Koi,
Filip Edstrom,
Oliver Newall,
Rand Santos andÂ
Solomon Williams, among others, take the pitch – all of whom have significant starting role experience in both sevens and 15s under their belt.
Â
The Bears are also traveling a handful of newcomers looking to don the Blue and Gold for the very first time in collegiate competition. Nine of the 30 players on the travel party are new to Cal's roster, eager to make their collegiate debuts.
Â
"We don't normally play this early in the fall and it has shortened our preparation and stressed our readiness," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "However, it's fun to play and I sense the team is looking forward to competing, ready or not."
