BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team won seven of nine matches on the opening day of the Cal Winter Invitational – with the Golden Bears playing their first matches of 2026 – on Friday. Led by All-American Berta Passola Folch, the Golden Bears swept their three doubles matches and won four matches in singles as the annual Cal tournament got underway at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
 
Ninth-ranked Passola Folch – the NCAA singles runner-up in November – trailed Stanford's 67th-ranked Monika Ekstrand after one set but rebounded to capture the final two sets in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory. The Cal senior also paired with sophomore Naomi Xu to defeat Cal Poly's Kennedy Buntrock and Jessica MacCallum in doubles 6-4.
 
The Cal Winter Invitational resumes action Saturday at 11 a.m. PT and concludes Sunday.
