No. 5 Cal Edged Out By No. 3 Stanford On Senior Day
Slyngstadli Breaks Program’s 100 Breaststroke Record
BERKELEY – The No. 5 California women's swimming & diving team took No. 3 Stanford down to the wire in both program's regular-season finale Saturday. The Cardinal prevailed 154-145 in the Senior Day dual meet that was decided in the final lap of the final event at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.
Prior to the meet, Cal's class of 2026 was honored in a special Senior Day ceremony.
Femke Hoppenbrouwer,
Sydney Griscavage,
Jessica Davis, Liliou Ressnecourt, and
Abby Herscu were celebrated as they prepared to compete at Spieker for the final time.
The Golden Bears recorded several Cal top-10 times, a Spieker record, and for the first time this season a program record was broken as freshman Silje Slynstadli notched the fastest 100-yard breaststroke time at 58.21 to take second place.
The first top-10 mark came in the first event with the Cal quartet of
Teagan O'Dell,
Annie Jia, Slyngstadli, and
Mary-Ambre Moluh recording the 10
th-fastest 200 medley relay time (1:34.55) to take second place.
Freshman
Claire Weinstein showed out in the 200 free, breaking her own Spieker record with a time of 1:42.13, which puts her into a tie for seventh on the program's all-time list. Fellow freshman O'Dell followed with the ninth-fastest 100 backstroke time (50.51) to give the Bears back-to-back wins.
Mia West had an incredible showing posting the eighth-fastest time in program history in two different events. The sophomore won the 200 butterfly (1:53.32) and took second in the 100 free (47.72).
On the diving side,
Violet Williamson posted a score of 328.43, the fourth-highest three-meter mark in Cal history, two take second place and also finished second in the one-meter with a score of 288.30.
Cal swept the 200 back podium with O'Dell leading the way with the program's ninth-fastest time at 1:51.13. Moluh (1:54.56) and
Finley Anderson (1:55.73) finished in second and third.
O'Dell wasn't done yet as the freshman finished the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 IM. Her time of 1:53.19 was the second-best time in the nation this year and the seventh in Cal history.
Stanford took a slight lead into the final event, the 400 free relay. The very young Bears team hung tough pushing the Cardinal to the final lap of the meet but Stanford's A team finished 1.65 seconds faster than the field to seal the race and the dual.
Both teams will meet again at the ACC Championships which will take place from Feb. 17-21 in Atlanta, Georgia.
