HONOLULU – The No. 9 California beach volleyball team's gauntlet of a season-opening week continued Friday with two more narrow losses at the Outrigger DUKE Kahanamoku Beach Classic on Queens Beach in Honolulu.

The Golden Bears dropped 3-2 decisions to No. 4 USC and No. 6 Texas. Cal is now 0-4 so far this season, with all four defeats coming against top-10 opponents and by the same 3-2 score.

The Bears' No. 1 pair of Emma Donley and Portia Sherman remained perfect with victories in both duals and are now 4-0 so far this year. The duo defeated the Longhorns' Ava Patton and Katie Hashman 21-16, 21-19 and then followed up with a 24-22, 21-17 triumph over the Trojans' Ashley Pater and Kennedy Coakley. Pater and Coakley were AVCA Second Team-All Americans last season.

Transfers Grace Hong and Elle Evers teamed up for their first win at Cal, defeating Texas' Chloe Charles and Lily Davis 21-17, 20-22, 16-14 on Court 4. Gia Fisher and Ava Haughy also registered a win against USC, getting by Alana Embry and Madison Goellner 21-17, 25-23 on Court 3. Fisher and Haughy also dropped a hard-fought three-setter to the Longhorns' Emma Grace Robertson and Savannah Thomas 21-15, 15-21, 15-11.

Cal closes out play in Honolulu on Saturday with duals against No. 1 UCLA and No. 16 Hawai'i.
