BERKELEY – Johanne Svendsen clinched her second victory in her third match as a Golden Bear as the 12th-ranked California women's tennis team defeated No. 21 Clemson 4-1 in its ACC opener on Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

The 74th-ranked Danish freshman, who joined the Bears in January, beat Jade Groen 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-4 at court-one singles to end the match and give Cal a 3-0 record (1-0 ACC). Clemson is now 10-3 (0-1 ACC).

Earlier, Cal took a 1-0 lead when Berta Passola Folch and Tiziana-Marie Schomburg bested Gaia Parravicini and Romana Cisovska 6-4 on court two to clinch the doubles point. Also posting doubles wins for the Bears were Svendsen and Mao Mushika, who beat Groen and Rinon Okuwaki 6-4 on court one, and Mille Johanna Moerk and Anya Murthy, who topped Artemis Aslanisvili and Talia Neilson-Gatenby 6-4 on court three.

Moerk made the score 2-0 when the freshman defeated Neilson-Gatenby 6-4, 6-4 at court-five singles. Thirteenth-ranked Passola Folch – the senior All-American and NCAA singles runner-up from last fall – followed with a 6-1, 7-6(2) victory over Cisovska on court two to give Cal a 3-0 advantage.

Clemson earned its lone win of the day when Cal's 55th-ranked Mushika fell to the Tigers' 103rd-ranked Okuwaki 6-2, 7-5 on court three, leaving the Bears with a 3-1 lead.

Svendsen then wrapped up the match with her win on court one to improve her singles record to 3-0. The newest Bear earned her first collegiate win when she clinched Cal's season-opening 4-3 result over then-No. 17 UCLA on Jan. 30 in Berkeley.

The Bears return to Hellman on Saturday at noon PT, when they host No. 61 Georgia Tech in another ACC battle.
