No. 9 Bears Notch First Win Of Season

Cal Blanks No. 16 Hawai'i, 3-0

HONOLULU – The No. 9 California beach volleyball team waited out six hours of lightning delays before finally registering its first victory of the season by blanking No. 16 Hawai'i 3-0 on the final day of the Outrigger DUKE Kahanamoku Beach Classic on Saturday.

The Golden Bears, who also had a scheduled dual against No. 1 UCLA canceled due to the weather, got straight-set victories from its No. 4 pair of Grace Hong and Marilu Pally and No. 5 duo of Elle Evers and Savanna Lau. Gia Fisher and Ava Haughy, playing on the No. 2 court, won in three sets.

Because of the weather delay, the dual ended as soon as Cal reached three match victories, meaning Cal's No. 1 and No. 3 matches went unfinished.

The Bears began the tournament with consecutive 3-2 losses to No. 2 Stanford, No. 7 Loyola Marymount, No. 6 Texas and No. 4 USC. Cal's No. 1 pair of Emma Donley and Portia Sherman went undefeated, and Sherman was named the tourney's best defender. Fisher and Haughy went 4-1.

Cal makes its home debut next weekend in the Battle of the Bay. The Bears host Sac State and UC Davis on Friday and USF and Pacific on Saturday.
