No. 12 Cal Blanks No. 59 Georgia Tech To Stay Unbeaten
BERKELEY – Laura Cilekova posted a straight-set singles win to clinch the 12th-ranked Cal women's tennis team's 4-0 victory over No. 59 Georgia Tech under sunny skies at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Â
The Golden Bears improved to 4-0 overall (2-0 ACC), while the Yellow Jackets fell to 4-6 (0-2).
Â
The clinching win – a 7-5, 6-0 result over Given Roach – was the first of Cilekova's career and marked the third clinching win by a Cal freshman in four matches this season.
Â
Cal took a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point.
Mille Johanna Moerk and
Anya Murthy began the day with a 6-0 win over Roach and Eleni Karantali on court three, and then
Berta Passola Folch and
Tiziana-Marie Schomburg secured the point with a 6-4 triumph over Taly Licht and Sabritt Dozier on court two.
Â
In singles, 55th-ranked Mushika doubled Cal's lead when she defeated Licht 6-1, 6-1 on court two, 13th-ranked Passola Folch made the score 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Alejandra Cruz and Cilekova ended the match on court three.
Â
"Both were impressive wins these last two days, and we were missing players, but the Bears stepped up all the way through," Cal interim head coach
Kris Kwinta said. "We had Anya play, Tizi, Mille, and they were stepping up big time. They all won big sets. Yesterday against Clemson, Mille won a big match. It's nice to see that the players are ready when their names are called, and you had the players in the stands supporting. It was a team effort. I'm most proud that there's a collective effort and that they're staying together. Everybody's adding something to the success."
Â
Cal continues its homestand when it hosts NC State next Friday and Wake Forest next Saturday at Hellman.
