LAST TIME OUT
Cal upset North Carolina 196.800-196.750 in Haas Pavilion last Friday night, which was the first meet the Bears have contested at their home venue in nearly a month. It was a close one in Berkeley, with Cal and UNC tied as it came down to the final routine.
Tonya Paulsson performed a walk-off 9.875 floor routine to lift the Bears to victory and help the squad to its best floor rotation of 2026 with a 49.350. Paulsson won the all-around and the uneven bars title, while
Annalise Newman-Achee tied for first place on vault and took silver in the all-around.
Â
PAULSSON CONTINUES TO SHINE
Freshman
Tonya Paulsson continues to impress in her debut season for the Bears, racking up 18 top-three finishes and seven routines that have scored a 9.900 or higher (5 UB; 2 FX) this season. Paulsson ties for sixth in the nation on uneven bars with a 9.915 NQS and is the highest ranked ACC gymnast on the event. She also holds the Bears' best NQS on floor with a 9.870. Paulsson has reached the podium in the all-around in each meet since she began competing on all four events five weeks ago, and has collected gold in the AA three times.Â
Â
ALL-AROUNDER ANNALISE
Annalise Newman-Achee has collected eight all-around podium finishes in as many meets, taking gold at Pitt, silver at the Best of the West and versus NC State and UNC, and bronze at the Metroplex Challenge, Clemson, Stanford and the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad. Most recently, she set her career high on vault with a 9.900 and a stick against UNC, good for a portion of the event win. She set her personal best in the all around 39.475 at the Metroplex Challenge two weeks ago, highlighted by two 9.900 routines on uneven bars and balance beam. She began competing in the all-around this season after primarily featuring on uneven bars last season. Newman-Achee currently ranks tied for 24th in the nation in the all around with a 39.270 NQS.
Â
BEARS ON BARS
Four Bears have NQS scores that are currently ranked in the top 75 in the nation on uneven bars. Cal has recorded a combined nine 9.9+ routines on bars this season, including one 9.950 from
Tonya Paulsson in week two. It is currently the highest-ranking event for the team with a 49.275 NQS. The Bears had a strong showing on bars last week versus UNC, with
Miki Aderinto,
Sage Melkonian,
Casey Brown and
Tonya Paulsson each sticking their dismounts.
Â
MAKING STRIDES ON FLOOR EXERCISE
Cal set a new season high on floor exercise this past Friday against UNC, compiling a 49.350 on the event.
CJ Keuneke matched her career-best with a 9.900 before
Kyen Mayhew received the same score (which was a season-best) to help the squad win the rotation. The Bears have improved their season best on the event every week for the last five consecutive weeks. Cal's current No. 28 ranking on the event is its highest placement in the Road To Nationals weekly rankings this season.
