DAVIS -- The No. 4 California women's water polo team utilized a seven-goal scoring run in the first half to build a lead on host No. 16 UC Davis, then held off the Aggies for a 13-12 win today at Schaal Aquatics Center.
Julia Bonaguidi led the Golden Bears with a career-high four goals, and goalie
Talia Fonseca had nine saves to help Cal to 7-0 overall.
UC Davis pinned up the first two goals of the game before the Bears broke the game open with an answering seven-goal surge.
Feline Voordouw sparked the tally with her score at the post off a feed from
Holly Dunn, who then leveled the game with a blast of her own care of Voordouw's setup pass.
Julia Bonaguidi and
Maria Bogachenko rattled off two goals each next to close out the first period of play with Cal on top 6-2. In the second,
Talia Fonseca made an early save and then
Rosalie Hassett squashed the Aggies' next opportunity with a field block. At the other end,
Abbi Magee hit
Despoina Drakotou for a 6-on-5 finish that had the Bears on top 7-2. The teams would trade goals for the next stretch, and Cal was up 9-4 for halftime.
The third period saw the teams stay largely in stride, and the Bears were back up to a five-goal lead by the end of the third thanks to a pair of goals from
Abbi Magee and Bonaguidi's fourth of the day. Cal's 12-7 lead would dissipate with some savvy scoring from the Aggies.
Julianne Snyder had a key goal for the Bears with 3:56 on the clock, making it 13-10 before UC Davis delivered two more scores to get it to a one-goal game with 1:40 to go. Cal's defense buckled down, though, thanks in part to Hassett snagging late steals to secure victory for the visiting Bears.
