Men's Tennis Falls to No. 36 SMU 4-3
The No. 56 California Golden Bears (11-8) were beaten by No. 36 SMU (14-7) 4-3 at Hellman Tennis Complex on Sunday.Â
To begin the match, SMU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after doubles wins on courts two and three.
Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski and
Timofey Stepanov gave the Bears their lone doubles victory with a 6-2 victory on court one.Â
In singles play against the Mustangs,
Bernardo Munk Mesa secured the Bears' first point of the day with a 6-1, 6-3 straight-set victory. Munk Mesa's win was his seventh straight singles victory this season. The Mustangs reclaimed the lead with a 6-2, 6-4 victory on court two, but Cal responded when
Paris Pouatcha clinched the Bears' second point of the day with a 7-5, 6-1 straight-set victory on court five. Pouatcha's victory was his ninth straight singles win this season.Â
SMU responded on court one with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory, moving the Mustangs closer to clinching the match. However, the Bears evened the score when
Lenn Luemkemann earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory on court six. In the end, SMU clinched the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win on court three.Â
