LOS ANGELES – California track & field's hammer throwers kicked off the Golden Bears' slate of competition Friday at UCLA's Drake Stadium, with the eight-member group acting as the lone representatives for Cal at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival before the rest of its entries appear Saturday at the Jim Bush Legends Meet.
 
Sophomore Valentina Savva opened her collegiate season with a winning mark of 65.74m (215-8) on her final throw, while senior Audrey Jacobs recorded a season-best 63.12m (207-1) and junior Adrianna Coleman placed third at 61.17m (200-8). Junior Angie Schykerynec and redshirt junior Isabella Popejoy rounded out Cal's group with marks of 51.18m (167-11) and 48.63m (159-6), respectively.
 
On the men's side, sophomore Kai Barham finished third with a mark of 60.61m (198-10), which he reached on his fifth attempt, while redshirt freshman Miles Clark finished one place behind him at 59.34m (194-8) and senior Kai Burich recorded a season-best 58.94m (193-4).
