Cal Heads To San Diego Crew Classic
Bears To Race In 5 Events
California women's rowing will return to the waters for the San Diego Crew Classic this weekend, with the Golden Bears planning to send three varsity eight boats in addition to a pair of coxed fours to the competition at Crown Point Park in San Diego. The Bears will compete in various preliminary races beginning at 10 a.m. PT on Saturday, with the finals set for Sunday beginning at 9:23 a.m. Cal checked in at No. 10 in the most recent CRCA Coaches Poll.
Cal's top boat will compete for the Jessop-Whittier Cup while the 2V8+ will participate in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy race. The Bears' 3V8+ is slated to race in the women's open event, the Carley Copley Cup. The first varsity four will partake in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup while the 2V4+ will be in the Women's Collegiate B4+ event.
The Bears will face top crews from around the nation in all five events, including top-10 teams in Texas and Washington in addition to other West coast schools including USC, UC San Diego and UCLA, among others.
At last year's Crew Classic, the Bears finished third in each of their races with the eventual NCAA Champion Texas clinching the victory in the Jessop-Whittier Cup, Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy and Carley Copely Cup coxed eight races and the coxed four Karen Plumhleigh Cup.
Formed in 1973, the Crew Classic is considered one of the premier spring rowing regattas of the year and annually welcomes more than 4,200 athletes who compete in over 140 races.
