After a perfect home debut weekend at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts, the No. 10 California beach volleyball team is back on the road this week to face four nationally ranked opponents at the MPSF Coast to Coast Classic. The Golden Bears meet No. 3 and host USC and No. 13 LSU on Friday before taking on No. 16 Grand Canyon and No. 18 Washington on Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT
The Bears made their 2026 home debut last weekend at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts and registered perfect results, notching 5-0 wins over Sac State and UC Davis on Friday and USF and Pacific on Saturday. Cal only dropped a singular set across the 20 matches. The Bears' pair of seniors Mila Vugrincic and Jenna Colligan were especially dominant, holding their opponents to 10 points or less in five of the eight sets they played.

BEST OF THE BEST
Cal's No. 1 pair of senior Portia Sherman and junior Emma Donley have established themselves as one of the top duos in the country. After being named the first AVCA First-Team All-Americans in program history last season, the tandem has played at an elite level so far this season. They were named the AVCA/CBVB National Pair of the Week after their performance at the season-opening Outrigger DUKE Kahanamoku Beach Classic in Honolulu when they went 4-0, all against top-10 opponents. They then cruised to victories in all four of their matches last weekend. Sherman and Donley set a single-season program record last year with 28 victories.

DONLEY NAMED TO WATCH LIST
Emma Donley was named to the first-ever AVCA Collegiate Beach Player of the Year watch list last month. She is one of 16 student-athletes from across the country named to receive the recognition. Donley and playing partner Portia Sherman were named the first AVCA First-Team All-Americans in program history last season as well as being tabbed a Top Flight by the AVCA. Donley was also named to the All-MPSF First Team. Donley and Sherman broke the program's single-season pair wins record last season by going 28-7, with 17 of the victories coming against ranked opponents.

FISHER, HAUGHY MAKE WAVES
Senior Gia Fisher and junior Ava Haughy have emerged as one of the Bears' top pairs, having put together an 8-1 start to the season. The duo has gone 5-0 on Court 2 and 3-1 on Court 3. Fisher was an All-MPSF Second-Team pick last year. Haughy is in her first season with the Bears after going 32-29 in two seasons at Arizona State.

NEW FACES EXCELLING
It doesn't matter who is playing with them, transfers Grace Hong (USC) and Elle Evers (LSU) are simply producing this season. Hong and Evers are both 6-3 and have each played with four different partners, including each other. Hong has played four of the past five duals with senior Marilu Pally on Court 3 and Court 4 and won all four times. Evers has played twice with Yale transfer Mila Yarich and won both.

NEW HOME: The Bears will move into a new facility in 2027 – the Banatao Family Beach Volleyball Stadium. The project is being partially funded by Cal's successful Gender Equity Campaign that raised $8 million and allows for the campus' continued commitment to and compliance with Title IX – the landmark federal law that was enacted in 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program or activity receiving any type of financial aid.

HEAD COACH MEAGAN OWUSU: Head Coach Meagan Owusu is in her 10th season at the helm at Cal and has established the Bears as a consistent national power. Cal has qualified for each of the past four NCAA Championships and has ended the season ranked in the top 12 for eight straight years – including four straight top-10 finishes. Owusu was also a defensive specialist for Cal's indoor program from 2007-2010 and helped the Bears reach their only two NCAA Final Fours in history.
