No. 48 Cal Suffers 4-1 Defeat Against No. 3 Virginia

The No. 48 California Golden Bears (8-7) suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 3 Virginia (11-2) at Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday. 

To begin the match, Virginia took a 1-0 lead after wins on courts one and two. On court three, California's Bernardo Munk Mesa and Paris Pouatcha defeated Virginia's Keegan Rice and Andres Santamarta Roig 6-1. Munk Mesa and Pouatcha remain undefeated in doubles this spring. 

In singles play against the Cavaliers, the Bears suffered two straight-set losses on courts two and three. Sophomore Bernardo Munk Mesa claimed the Bears' first and only point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory on court four. Munk Mesa's win over No. 84 Jangjun Kim of Virginia is his first collegiate ranked win. The Cavaliers secured the victory over the Golden Bears with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 victory on court six. 

Next: The Bears will look to bounce back against Virginia Tech at home on Sunday.
